All is well...

Well Jaxon's surgery went very well!

He couldn't have any food (just clear liquids) after midnight, and nothing at all after 8:30 the morning of the surgery, so when he woke up hungry in the morning I gave him a bottle of pedialite, and he must have been hungry enough that that was able to hold him off. I was a bit worried because when he's hungry he can be a little bear, but he did great. We had to be at Primary's at 10 AM and his surgery was at 11:30. Everything was right on time too which was nice. I was a nervous wreck as usual. I don't handle this kind of stuff very well. And it was hard because he was all happy and playing, he had no idea what he was in for, poor kid. But the doctors and nurses were so cute with him, so when they took him from us to go in the OR, he didn't even care, he was all smiles for them too.

Since he was in the NICU for so long, we weren't able to get him circumcised. And to do it after they are 2 weeks old they have to get put out to have the procedure. So we had no idea when he was going to be able to have it done. When I found out he had to have the eye surgery, I quickly called a urologist to see if he could come do it while he was out for the eye surgery. And they thought it would be a great idea, the less you have to go under anesthesia the better! So poor thing is sore at both ends! ;)

He had eye muscle surgery on both eyes to fix his lazy eye problem. The doctor said that 1 in 3 babies that had the ROP surgery like Jaxon had will develop a lazy eye. And Aaron had the same problem when he was little so he has also had the surgery (twice!). So the poor thing didn't have good odds! That's probably why he had the problem in both eyes, the previous surgery and genetics! The doctor did also say that in most cases the surgery has to be repeated, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Both surgeons said everything went very well, he did great while under anesthesia. And they were a bit worried about how long it would take him to wake up and get off the vent since he's a 24 weeker and has asthma. I guess they tend to take a long time to wake up. But he woke up fast, and was off the vent by the time he was in recovery. He just had to have a bit of oxygen blow by for an hour or so. Not too bad! And the first thing he wanted when he woke up was a bottle, and he downed that! So he didn't seem to get sick from the anesthesia which is nice, I can not say the same thing for myself!

But he's sure a trooper, his eyes don't seem to bother him much- they are just really red on the insides. But he is sure sore downstairs! His little "thing" is a few shades of purple (He's going to be so proud of me for sharing that info!), but he hasn't been whiny at all, just when I change his bum and I have to put drops in his eyes 4 times a day which he doesn't care for. But he's been great! You'd never know by his attitude that he just had surgery 2 days ago.

I forgot to take my camera to the hospital so I had to take pics with my phone, so once I figure out how to get them off my phone onto the computer I will post pics. Until then, here's a pic I took today, you can barley see the red in the corners-and I just put drops in so they're a little watery.

I am glad that he did well with the surgeries. That is always scary having them have anesthesia. What a trooper!
